The idea of the “Discourse” came as a realization that as an Elected Grand Lodge Officer there was not enough communication between the members of the Craft; regardless of whether it was between Brothers in the Lodge, Lodge Officers to Members, District Officers to Lodges and Members, or Grand Lodge to all its Members. After much thought, it was obvious that I would either be part of the problem or part of the solution, so I decided on the latter and started a newsletter called the “Discourse” in an effort to communicate with those who sought further knowledge and wanted to improve themselves in Masonry. These missives were distributed over the course of nearly three years and addressed a variety of topics related to Masonry. Some of these messages can be applied to our lives, personal or professional. A Brother looking to improve himself in Masonry and assist his Lodge in the government of it, will find in the content herein different views and choices on how to conduct Masonic business in a way that would bring harmony and prosperity to Lodges and peace of mind to the Brother that wants to see his Fraternity do better. The newsletter, from its very first issue was only sent to those Brothers who wanted to improve in Masonry and have a serious conversation about the Craft. It was never sent to anyone that did not request to be on the mailing list, as we were only looking for interested Masons. The purpose of the “Discourse” from its very first issue was clear and simple and it was detailed at the end of every newsletter that was sent out from the very first issue, where it stated: “My Brothers, the newsletters are intended to be thought provoking, to get you to think creatively, to get you thinking “what if” To dare you to improve yourself and your Lodge.” The newsletter was started with those on an email list accumulated over the previous year and a request was sent out asking if they would like to receive the Discourse. Only those that responded were placed on the future email list and thus it began. Thanks to the many Brothers that perceived worth within the pages of the “Discourse” and forwarded the newsletter to their friends; and so the list grew with many of their friends requesting to be on the list themselves as not to have to wait until it was forwarded to them. To my amazement, pretty soon we were reaching Brothers all over the United States, Europe, and Australia; where it was used as educational missives, not only for their personal use but also shared with their Lodges and friends as Masonic Education. I hope and pray to the G.A.T.U. that this book “Masonic Discourses” will bring you enjoyment and satisfaction, most importantly I hope it provokes you to think, the what if’s? The why for? To help you seek light and that you share that light with those around you. Then and only then, my Brothers, we will be a force in Masonry and in our communities for the type of man we have become; always giving praise to the Supreme Architect of the Universe who gives light and purpose if we chose to find it.
