It's a quiet night in Austin, Texas until a residential gas explosion near the University shakes up the neighborhood and leads authorities to a body and more unusual finds at the debris site. Fresh off a long-overdue vacation former Portland cop and current Insurance Investigator Steve Latham returns home to find this case waiting for him. Information from friends on the local police force, and a mutual concern that the victim's cause of death may actually be a homicide, resuscitate Steve’s dormant detective skills. But if Steve is to help the police solve this case, it won't be on his own. And as the scope of the investigation grows, so too does the level of danger, putting those he most cares for at greatest risk.
