Daniel Bay Gibbons has aspired to be a novelist his entire life. Born in Salt Lake City, he began his first historical novel at the age of fourteen and has been writing ever since. A well-known Salt Lake City trial attorney, he was educated at the University of Utah and Willamette University. During his professional life, he was also a refugee sponsor with the Tolstoy Foundation, a long-time radio talk-show host, an elementary school chess coach, a founding member of the Holladay City Council, and a frequent guest lecturer in Ukrainian law schools. In 2001 he became a trial judge in suburban Salt Lake County, serving on the bench for ten years. Dan walked away from his judgeship and his legal career in 2011 when he accepted a calling to serve with his wife, Julie, as an LDS mission president in Russia and Kazakhstan. He had previously served a two-year Church mission as a young man in Germany, as an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple, and twice as bishop. From 2011 to 2014 Dan and Julie lived in Novosibirsk, Russia, and traveled more than 750,000 miles throughout Russian Siberia and Central Asia, as well as in Eastern Europe, the Baltic nations, Ukraine, and Turkey. Dan returned to the United States in 2014 with a determination to make his way as a full-time writer of historical fiction, novels of suspense, and Mormon history and biography. He is the author of several books, including the Old Charlie and the Prophet series of historical novels, the biographical series Remembering Seven Prophets, and the historical mystery series Sherlock Holmes in the Country of the Saints. He is the coauthor, with his father, Francis M. Gibbons, of two previous titles: A Gathering of Eagles and Nethermost: Missionary Miracles in Lowly Places. Aside from his passion for writing, Dan loves reading books (he has a home library of more than 5,000 titles), learning languages (he is fluent in German and Russian, reads ancient Greek and has studied Biblical Hebrew), and running (he currently runs four to six miles a day and has completed seven marathons). He is married to Julie Glenn Gibbons, and they live in Holladay, Utah. They have five children—Annie, Jenny, Liz, Abby and Josh—and five grandchildren.
