Synopsis

The Unattended War is based on real events and real people, it involves the gradual transformation of a young idealistic Coast Guard seaman. Presented with the opportunity to volunteer to go to Vietnam, he sees it as a means to adventure, escape Boston’s elitist snobbishness, and distance himself from a brief dalliance with a Mobster’s girlfriend. The protagonist, Jim Morgan, is snowbound somewhere in Northern Minnesota with his friend, (unnamed throughout the story) during the Great Blizzard of 1975. Unable to go ice fishing because of the storm, Jim reluctantly tells the tale of his Vietnam experiences to his friend. The narration begins with his leaving Boston by train. He visits his family in Milwaukee before continuing by rail to San Francisco, where the training begins. Each phase of his experience brings Jim closer to the realization that the glory of war is a Hollywood illusion. The mock POW training and failings of some of his comrades, corruption of Army sergeants running brothels in Saigon, disrespect of Vietnamese lives (calling them gooks), and the Coast Guard’s ineptitude in combat versus their mission as lifesavers—all chipping away at his idealism. He becomes an Ishmael, his boat the Point Darwin, the Pequod.
