Synopsis
Managing people is never any one thing. Consultants regularly put forward faddish designs for managing people but seldom deal with the real complexity of working through people to get the job done. Dr. Bassett critically reviews the many approaches to “motivating people” and concludes that there is no magic formula. The manager must somehow effectively exercise control through a blend of good communication, effective standard setting and sound personnel policies. He/she must elicit commitment by creating a culture of high work standards in which people feel empowered and respected, and, ultimately, must organize work effectively. An extensive and complex body of knowledge and practice that constitutes the Manager’s Craft must be acquired and applied to achieve these objectives.

Dr. Glenn Bassett is Professor Emeritus of Management and former Dean of Business at the University of Bridgeport. A graduate of Berkeley and Yale, as well as a former corporate staffer at General Electric, Dr. Bassett’s career has focused on the science and practice of people management. He is the author of numerous articles and published books, including The Managers Craft.
