As one dad offered in the survey, "The tributes help by making us proactive. It gives us something to do rather than just sitting and letting the feelings of deep grief overwhelm us. Rod Mebane is known for his ability to simplify complex things. In the early 90s, for example, when he was treasurer of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, he decided to study Spanish at a local community college and (for "fun") ended up publishing "Más Fácil," a textbook that contains the rules of Spanish grammar in less than 100 pages of text. Rod has made significant contributions applying his sense-making skills in the worlds of nonprofit management, institutional investment, organizational communication, and corporate learning. Rod’s most recent work is the highly regarded "Tributes to Lost Children" – a remarkable mosaic of stories about things families have done to honor and sustain the memories of their departed children. He came to this topic after his daughter Emma – his fourth and youngest child – died in her sleep in July 2011. Acting on curiosity, he surveyed what other families have done to honor their children and found that they had many treasures to share. In compiling a summary of what he learned, he developed the Tributes Framework, which attributes the various tribute activities to the families’ interest 1) to keep the children present in their lives, 2) to have their children be remembered, and 3) to have some good from their losses. Rod also recently designed and published the 5-star, award-winning novel "Tomorrow Comes," written by Donna Mebane, that Kirkus calls “an emotional novel about grief and the enduring power of love after death.” Rod holds a bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College and a master’s degree in communication from the University of Pennsylvania. He currently works as a writer, editor, and independent publisher and lives with his wife Donna in Geneva, Illinois, a far-west suburb of Chicago, where his son Ben also lives. Son Jason is in Seattle, daughter Sarah is in Japan, and daughter Emma is always close in spirit. When pursuing avocational interests, Rod may be found carving wooden lovespoons, keeping bees, and developing program content for Starshine Galaxy Foundation NFP.
