Hardback. Etat : Very Good. Coker, Sharon (illustrateur). Why Did We have to Say Goodbye? Valerie's Story is a beautifully illustrated book that shares the brutal impact of domestic violence from a child's perspective. The story, written in verse by her adoptive mother, relates one young girl's words and experiences as she grieves the sudden loss of her Baby Maxwell and life as she knew it. A story of love, loss and hope, Why Did We have to Say Goodbye? is a message to be shared with children and families who have been impacted by child abuse and with those families currently at risk. It is a beautifully illustrated book for use in both at home and in therapeutic settings. Children will be able to see that they are not alone, and the underlying message is to help them recognize risk and share their concerns with adults who will help them. Adult readers will benefit from viewing the harsh results of child abuse through a child's eyes. The artwork is amazing and the questions posed by one little girl give voice to the confusion and pain of many children. Kimberly A. Mann Ph.D., L.C.S.W. When she was just four years old, Valerie's brother died at the hand of their birth father. Why Did We have to Say Goodbye? illustrates the impact of loss, describing her sad, scared and angry feelings and following her growth as she begins to learn at a very young age to manage loss. Following her path through the sudden removal from her home and the loss of everything familiar to her, to her placement in foster care, to her subsequent adoption, readers will be inspired by Valerie's strong spirit and deep faith. Based on her actual words, journal entries and experiences, this story was originally compiled as Valerie's adoption Lifebook, a tool to help her understand her life story, making connections between her past experiences and her present situation in a healthy, therapeutic way. Lifelike illustrations are accompanied by childlike drawings which effectively share the impact of the most traumatic parts of Valerie's story. This story describes a tragic and life-changing experience that too many children have to endure, providing an impetus for intervention, and giving hope to other children who live life at risk. It may be used by both families and therapists as a resource for dealing with abuse and loss of a child. This book gives heart to a reality that affects many families. It tells the true story of child abuse and the consequences for the family members who are left behind. This book would be a positive addition to any therapist's resources for children and their families dealing with abuse and loss of a child. Meg Lorton, M.S.W., L.C.S.W.
