Synopsis

Royce Bassett, whose ancestor arrived on Cape Cod in 1621, is legendary in the clam industry of the Lower Cape. He dug softshell clams for a living and knows more about Cape clams than anyone who ever lived. Royce transitioned into commercial processing of sea clams and developed clam pies and chowder that still have a nationwide reputation. As an ‘old salt’ Royce shares many classic stories of the Harwich, Brewster and Orleans area, starting in the 1940s. Chopper Young is well known in the Wellfleet area of Cape Cod, as a long-term oyster farmer and commercial clammer. He started shucking clams and oysters at an early age and became the region’s fastest shucker. Since 2001 he has been a big name in oyster shucking competitions around New England, the Mid-Atlantic region and Internationally. He’s most famous for winning the World Oyster Opening Championship in Galway, Ireland in 2008. You can buy his 'Chopper’s Choice' oysters in Wellfleet. He and Royce have been lifelong friends and still share stories while devouring fresh oysters and Royce’s clam pies.
