Synopsis

For 25 years award-winning travel writer Ken McAlpine has rambled about the globe, penning observations funny, subtle, quirky and moving. Toting an adult eye and a child’s heart, he has plunged down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, (mostly) avoided the Darwinian battles of the Amazon rainforest and out-the-back Australia, surfed with Peter Pan, picked up (and carefully replaced) a live grenade in the silent caves of Peleliu, and thrilled to the unbound symphony of the Galapagos. These stories transport you to rare and bewitching places, but each ferries something more: lessons in beauty, marvel, superficial judgment, the price of freedom, and, perhaps most important, our very short time here. Why not fill it with as much loopy giddiness as possible?

À propos de l'auteur

Ken McAlpine’s magazine articles, from which these stories are drawn, have earned three Lowell Thomas awards, travel writing's top award. He is also the author of seven books; a collection of fiction, non-fiction and essays. Sunset Magazine called his novel Together We Jump "lyrical, evocative and deeply moving... a luminous American novel." The story was praised by the Los Angeles Review as "poetic... a roller coaster ride through the mind and soul... McAlpine's use of language and plot made every page turn." His novel Fog, an eerie maritime mystery that unfolds on the wreck-strewn coast of Cape Cod in 1882, was described by a reviewer as "one of the most intelligent, richly detailed, deeply felt and evocative novels I've read." His non-fiction works include the books Off Season: Discovering America on Winter's Shore (a Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers selection) and Islands Apart: A Year on the Edge of Civilization, and a collection of essays, West is Eden: Reflections on this Gift Called Life. His most recent novel Juncture is a cerebral Jaws; a suspense-filled thriller, a story of primal love, our changing oceans and, perhaps, a final fork in the road. In the oceans creatures are stirring, a fast-rising tide of seemingly random shocking events not random at all…
