The making of a dark fantasy series
I have a strange love for the fantasy genre. I don't make a big distinction between pulp and literary classics. If the story is good, I'm a happy reader. Anonymous medieval poetry like Beowulf is as interesting to me as Conan the Barbarian.
The Shedim Rebellion has a variety of influences from R.A. Salvatore and Raymond E. Feist to Dante's Inferno and Paradise Lost. But I think my strangest influence was my health. In 2010, I survived a battle with cancer, and I created a dark fantasy setting to write about some of my experiences.
My main character is an infamous warrior who settles problems with a big sword. He has a talent for surviving wounds that would kill lesser men. The price of his near immortality is living with pain. He is often hurt so bad that death would be a blessing. The best parts of him are slowly dying, and the once great empire he served rots from within. He doesn't recognize himself anymore.
That is what cancer feels like, but I buried the theme deep inside an action story. I made sure the courtly intrigue, clashing armies, and demonic sorcery took center stage. If the story has a few haunting moments, it is probably because I was really writing about my own life and death struggles.
Burke Fitzpatrick finished his MFA in Creative Writing in 2007. A life-long student and workaholic, he holds two other degrees in Graphic Design and Computer Information Systems. After surviving a battle with cancer he added "stop wasting time and write those damn books" to his bucket list. He is currently working on his first dark fantasy series the Shedim Rebellion.
