Synopsis

On beautiful Dalby Island in Washington, Jocelyn Burgowski is turning fourteen and life is starting to suck. Her divorced mom’s an alcoholic. Her beloved dad just re-married—to the town librarian, of all people—and her older brother is a butt. Only Jocelyn’s flying dreams keep her going: they seem so real! Then, on her birthday, those dreams come true. Jocelyn flies. Really. Learning her new powers in secret, Joss revels in the freedom we all long for. But when her brother gets in trouble, he and Jocelyn are abruptly bundled off to live with Mom. Now Jocelyn is faced with a choice: must she sacrifice her powers to save her mom? Does The Flying Burgowski have the strength to heal the damage caused by secrets of the past?

À propos de l'auteur

A high school English and history teacher for twenty years, Gretchen K. Wing pushed her students to find their voices through writing, and to pay attention to the voices of others through reading. Now, Wing has applied that same passion to the story of a girl who needs empowerment and finds it, not in magic as she hopes, but in herself. Wing’s short stories have been published in the online journal Shark Reef, and she writes a regular column for the San Juan Islands’ Islands’ Weekly. She is also a budding singer/songwriter, performing with the group Chicken Biscuit, and she blogs regularly at gretchenkwing.wordpress.com. When not writing or playing guitar, Wing is a baker at Holly B’s Bakery, and enjoys running, biking, backpacking, cooking, and reading. Wing was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, before becoming a Pacific Northwesterner. She holds a B.A. in English from Harvard University and a Master’s in History from the University of Washington. She and husband Ken have two grown children. The Flying Burgowski is the first book for Wing, who lives on Lopez Island in Washington State.
