Synopsis

"This is Kenneth!" Who would predict a life-changing drama ten years after young Billy first meets his cousin?

As world war looms on the horizon, lonely Billy Wilson is delighted to learn his cousin is coming to live nearby. But frail, talented Kenneth proves to be a nightmare. Older, but smaller, devious Kenneth envies Billy's superior strength and home comforts. He manipulates and bests Billy at every turn. The four parents see only Kenneth's porcelain looks and perfect manners, oblivious to his psychological bullying.

Kenneth's desire for power and territory mirrors in micro the tensions in Europe

Billy's only protection is his secret symbol of power, a Cossack sabre. This has its own history on the Polish/German border at the start of WW1. During evacuation and wartime miseries, this icon inspires and sustains Billy as Kenneth increasingly invades every aspect of his life. Even after VE-Day, Billy cannot escape Kenneth's manipulations, especially as they are now living in the same house, developing very different talents and suffering London's post-war austerity. Soon adolescent tensions explode. The outcomes are dramatic, unpredictable and long-lasting.

Readers who enjoy a long read have the three books: Intrusion, Infiltration and Impact (1937-1951) in this coming-of-age trilogy. Ideal for Ian McEwan fans
