The comparisons offer context for Cooper's portraits and reflect the close family networks among limners of the period. The exhibition includes an image of Oliver Cromwell described as one of the greatest British portraits, as well as other significant works by Cooper. | The introductory text considers Cooper's standing as a miniaturist and portrait painter, noting comparisons with Van Dyck and Lely and the personal presence attributed to his sitters. It also acknowledges the limits of presenting the career and extensive output of a major artist within a commercial gallery. The catalogue recalls the 1974 National Portrait Gallery exhibition curated by Daphne Foskett, whose research included a monograph on Cooper, and recognises her contribution to the study of miniature painting.
