The collection of beautifully-illustrated stories in this new elementary level reader includes re-told traditional Japanese stories Yamata no Orochi and Setsubun no Oni and the classic tale, Alice in Wonderland, plus two new stories, The Three Friends and Mari's Blue Pot. With a vocabulary range of 500 words and 500 to 1,500 characters per story, Level 1 Volume 1 of Let's Read Japanese is equivalent to Level A1 (CEFR) and Novice (ACTFL). The text has been carefully graded, ie. vocabulary and grammar are controlled, so that learners of Japanese can start enjoying reading a story from the early stage of their learning. Suzuko Anai is a Senior Lecturer in Japanese Studies at Oxford Brookes University. She has been involved in Japanese language education for over 30 years in both the UK and overseas. She was a Chair of The Association of Japanese Language Teachers in Europe from 2007-2011 as well as an elected member of the Japanese Language Committee of the Association for Language Learning UK since the Committee s establishment. She designed the grade structure and selects themes and topics for the stories. She works closely with the authors and illustrators to ensure the series provides unique learning materials. Irène Hill is the Programme Lead for Modern Languages at Oxford Brookes University. She is a strong team player, leader by example, inspiring others towards shared goals, mentoring and coaching in the development of Modern Languages. She is leading the Oxford Brookes reading series. Keiko Ikeshiro is an Instructor in Japanese Studies at Oxford Brookes University, and an experienced teacher at both secondary and higher education levels. She is a member of The Association of Japanese Language Teachers in Europe and the British Association for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language. She played a leading part in creating the Let's Read Japanese vocabulary and grammar. She selects stories and works closely with re-writers and illustrators to produce enjoyable and culturally insightful books for learners.
