Synopsis

This book is about frogs, and their toad cousins, and their fascinating amphibian lives. Frogs live all over the world, even managing to withstand freezing their own bodies. Cold-blooded, but astonishingly similar to animals biologically, they perhaps offer a glimpse of a common ancestor. From an egg protected and nourished by frogspawn through its development first as the vegetarian fish like tadpole to becoming the carnivorous frog “A frog's life” is a journey of discovery into the lives and habits of one of nature's most treasured and diverse creatures. Worshiped as a goddess by the Egyptians and for many cultures a symbol of good luck, but for others, a tasty treat. A staple of French cuisine, an invaluable aid to scientists, biologists, Amazonian hunters and an early warning system of ecological problems. A frog’s life explores the contribution of these amphibians with Evelyn Wood’s usual mix of fact and fun, anatomical diagrams, cartoons a quiz and colouring pages.

À propos de l'auteur

Evelyn Wood started writing and painting as a small child often getting into trouble for being so absorbed that he did not notice a new lesson had started. English, history, nature and art were, and remain, favourite subjects. Dropping out of art school he worked on farms before embarking on a business career. During his working life he travelled extensively and lived in a number of countries in Europe, Africa and Asia. In each place he was able pursue his love of nature by learning about its flora and fauna. Following cancer diagnosis in 2010 he had to retire, but decided, supported by his wife, to fulfil a dream and write children's books. As a child he often felt his many questions were not answered properly or brushed aside. In his books he tries to present information in a way he would have enjoyed when young. He believes that children are inquisitive and deserve proper answers. His books aim to provide a solid foundation that will be useful for further studies. His nature series, Exploring with Too Woo all combine anatomically correct diagrams, fun cartoons with facts, a quiz, colouring and a diary page. They introduce the use in nature study of Latin and Greek with an easy explanation and pronunciation guide. Evelyn gives talks in schools and libraries based on his books. Books in the series are: The magical world of Butterflies #1 The busy world of Bees #2 A frog's life #3 (In Danish: Sommerfuglenes magiske verden) His adventure story: The search for journey's end has been praised as a modern classic.
