Synopsis

The second novel by the author of the acclaimed Dodge and Burn (Dodo Ink, 2016) is surreal, speculative, read-in-one-sitting, feminist folklore inspired by The Master and Margarita and narrated by a djinn who is obsessed with the young American woman who has released him from a bottle. This cerebral, beautifully crafted story begins in a trailer park in the US southwest and follows Aurora to an elite New England boarding school where she is drawn deep into Jungian psychology, and then rapidly to occult ideas and manuscripts, paganism and nature worship, the Druids, ancient Greeks and Romans, the Vikings and Celts, polytheists, and animists. Aurora and her roommate, Sylvia, and three California girls form an occult group believing everything to be alive, possessed of life forces or spirits. Together they discover for better and for worse that, 'With sorcery, as everyone knows, there is no stopping it.' But even as Aurora rises above her trailer trash origins and absorbs the hidden knowledge of the ancients, will she ever escape the all-encompassing power of the patriarchy?
