In 1962 he was ordained Deacon, in Berkeley, California, and served his first curacy in England's capital of comedy, Knotty Ash. From 1966-69 he was British Chaplain in Haifa, Israel. He was there during the Six Day War, a high point of comedy's on-going opposite, tragedy. His time in Israel prepared him for his later role of Chair of the Manchester branch of the Council of Christians and Jews. This is an organisation which seeks to reconcile Jews and Christians by redeeming them from the tragic story of Christian contempt.
