Myself, Scott Gray, and Amy Moir came up with the concept for Hot Shot Phonics in 2014 when we were both kindergarten teachers at the same school in Chiang Mai, Thailand. We both taught young learners (5 to 6 year olds) and noticed the distinct lack of phonics workbooks available in South East Asia. After both of us moved to different schools I had the idea to create a phonics program and design workbooks that would appeal to both native speaking and ESL children. Nearly every school was using a phonics program devised and designed for native speaking children, although a vast majority of the students were not native speakers. This program progressed at a fast pace, which led to misunderstanding and confusion in the classroom. Myself and Amy created the HSP program to go along at a steady pace and involve many more different activities that the popular phonics program did not incorporate. The HSP program can be taught over a whole year, while the popular phonics program was designed to be a 10-week fast track course for schools that could not read and write. Asian schools have adopted this program and integrated it into the academic year which is not what it was designed and created for. HSP is the alternative phonics program that encourages children to learn through imagination, especially through the craft-based activities. We tested the content of the 5 books on an array of different students to make sure all of the activities and tasks achieved the designated outcome.
