Mona McAlpine grew up in the 1940s in the district of Whiteness in Shetland. In the 1960s she found herself working as the only nurse on Britain’s most remote inhabited island, Fair Isle. Mona spent more than 30 years as a nurse and midwife in South Africa, before returning to her native isles. Once home, Mona and her husband Iain set up their charity From Shetland With Love, supporting orphanages in southern Africa. Her charity work has raised more than £200,000.
