In the spring of 1865, Mary Jane Pritchard lay ill in her Glasgow home. Her sickness was persistent yet perplexing: bouts of violent vomiting followed by brief, deceptive recoveries. Her husband, Dr Edward William Pritchard, attended her constantly. He prepared her medicines himself. He reassured visitors that her constitution had always been delicate.
At first, there seemed to be nothing extraordinary in her decline. Victorian medicine offered many explanations for a woman’s frailty. But within the household, small observations began to accumula inte. A servant noticed patterns. A consulting physician grew uneasy. Improvement seemed often to follow absence; relapse followed intervention.
When Mary Jane died, grief was public and immediate. Suspicion moved more slowly.
Charged with poisoning his wife and mother-in-law with antimony, Pritchard stood trial in a case that exposed the uneasy authority of the nineteenth-century medical profession. How could illness be distinguished from its imitation? How easily could trust be manipulated behind the façade of respectability?
Drawing on contemporary reports, testimony, and archival records, Wendy Rhodes reconstructs the domestic world in which the crimes unfolded — the rhythms of the household, the shifting loyalties, the unspoken doubts — bringing to life a case that blurred the boundary between illness and intention.
This is a work of historical true crime told with narrative depth: a study of ambition, respectability, and the quiet mechanics of deception in Victorian Scotland.
