Synopsis
It is the mid 1990's, and with its stunning beaches and bays the island of Mujenga is ripe for development. Ben, a young English economist who has been posted to the Ministry of Finance, becomes an advisor to the president at a time when a billion dollar leisure resort is set to be built. The project promises jobs but will shift thousands from their land. Forging a friendship with the investor, Ben must choose between his conscience and an offer that, for some, is just too good to be true.Meanwhile, his life is being made harder by his girlfriend who wants to discover the darker side of paradise, his growing desire for Jo who is sweet and funny, and his friend Huck, a restaurateur with a taste for drugs whose sense of adventure is appealing at first, but ultimately it will lead to tragedy and a time of reckoning for an out-of-control Ben.Wealth and power are coming to an island with a history of oppression, and when dreams become nightmares it will be the innocent who suffer...

In the 1990's, Chris worked in Zanzibar's Ministry of Finance where he oversaw the first privatisation in the country's history and later became a presidential advisor. Subsequently, he worked in Cyprus on a $4bn development that was set for Zanzibar, but when al-Qaeda bombed Dar es Salaam and Nairobi in 1998 the funds failed to materialise and the projects were shelved. Bleed For Me, his first novel, is based loosely on his experiences in Zanzibar. He has lived in America, Zanzibar, Cyprus, Germany and Japan. He was born in 1970. www.cj-gardner.co.uk
