Synopsis

Announcing a positive and playful way to prevent bullying, teach kindness, and create caring classrooms! Teachers know the benefits of cooperative learning. The power of play in learning is also well documented. But what happens when you combine cooperative learning with play? You get cooperative games—the best of both worlds! Cooperative games are based on cooperation not competition. There are cooperative games of all sorts from circle games to PE games to board games. Research shows that cooperative games are not only fun; playing them measurably reduces aggression and increases pro-social behavior both during and after game play. Thus, it makes sense to use cooperative games for social and emotional learning and to prevent the meanness, domination, and aggression that can lead to bullying. The Cooperative Games Bullying Prevention Program is the first and only teacher resource that converts University research on cooperative games to a classroom-ready program that nurtures positive school climate to prevent bullying. Richly illustrated and fun to read, this 151-page book empowers teachers, parents, camp counselors, and other adults who care for children to think in new, compassionate, and effective terms about the bullying problem. While the book presents a practical method to prevent bullying by engaging children ages Pre-K to Grade 2 in cooperative games, it has a larger scope. It tells a story of general interest to everyone who cares for children and the future! The Cooperative Games Bullying Prevention Program is: • Easy to implement. The book describes a program consisting of games that are easy and fast to learn and use. • Evidence-based. The book gives instructions for reproducing a suite of games that was tested at the University of Nevada and proven effective for reducing aggressive beahavior. Additional relevant research on cooperative games is discussed. • Simple and flexible enough to fit into any school schedule. The games featured in this program are generally quite brief. They can be used alone for short play periods or combined to create play experiences of any duration. • Packed with practical information. The book is loaded with classroom tips that show how to build a positive school climate by replacing competition with cooperation. In all, it contains directions for 57 cooperative games appropriate for young children. • Age appropriate. The games and teacher tips in this book are suitable to use with children from ages of 3 to 7. • Useful in many settings. This manual is built to be used in schools. Of course, kids everywhere enjoy good games. So the book can be used at home, camp, parties, church gatherings and anywhere young children gather to have a good time. • Full of Insight, Inspiration, and Stories. Read about the history and rationale behind cooperative games, learn about the people who first struck upon the idea, see how cooperative play relates to the big picture of contemporary social issues, consider how cooperative games support living as a whole and happy person in troubled times, get smart about the tragic cost of bullying, and enjoy the author’s hand-drawn artwork while you develop practical knowledge about why and how we can learn to play together. • Low cost. The Cooperative Games Bullying Prevention Program features games that require no or very low-cost materials. None of the games are technology-based. There is an option to buy four inexpensive cooperative board games but that is not necessary. The book alone is sufficient to bring the magic of cooperative play to your classroom.
