With the support of the National Science Foundation, we interviewed successful mentors across the United States to find out what has worked to engage underrepresented students in the sciences. John Cabra is an Associate Professor at SUNY Buffalo State’s International Center for Studies in Creativity. With a team of creativity professionals and educators, John focuses on teaching, assessing and researching the science of creativity, training and developing leaders, and facilitating creative thinking and problem solving. John has experience in internal consulting, training and development, employee relations, and organizational development. With a strong bilingual expertise, he has presented his work in 22 countries.

John earned his Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology from the University of Manchester, England, and a M.S. in Creativity and Change Leadership from the State University of New York College at Buffalo. John has co-authored journal articles and book chapters in business, technology, engineering, and creativity, and he serves as an editorial board member of Creatividad y Sociedad, a creativity journal published at the University of Barcelona, Spain. In recognition for his work as an expert in the field of creativity, John was awarded the Buffalo State College President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and a Fulbright Scholarship.

Julia Figliotti is a Creative Specialist at Knowinnovation with a Bachelor of Arts in Writing and a Master of Science in Creativity. She has been published with National Public Radio, The Partnership for 21st Century Skills, and Gargoyle magazine. She contributed a chapter to Big Questions in Creativity 2014 and is co-author of the educational handbook Weaving Creativity into Every Strand of Your Curriculum. Julia’s projects include the co-design and management of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Everyday Creativity and the technical assistance for numerous innovation workshops.
