Exciting new research exposes a crime lost to history and theorizes about a famous Southern writer who subconsciously capitalized on it.
In the summer of 1938 at Fort Benning Army Post in Georgia a murder was committed. Major John Rutter Brooke, overwhelmed by gambling debts, was found guilty of killing his wife for her insurance money. This book explores her murder, the subsequent nationally sensationalized trial, and the military history of Major Brooke's immediate family. The famous novella published in 1941, Reflections in a Golden Eye, reveals the influence of the Brooke murder on Carson McCullers. Pearl Follett and Carson McCullers shared similar experiences of Fort Benning and Columbus, and the former is one of the few people still alive able to shed light on those experiences.
Fans of murder mystery, biography, history, military research, and Carson McCullers will want to read this book.
