Synopsis

Contemporary/Historical Suspense set amid the art world of modern day NYC and the dawn of the Renaissance in Italy Bronx born and bred, Mackenzie Ferrara is both nervous and excited to begin her career as a restorer of fine art at the prestigious Cloisters in New York City. The star of the restoration team is a handsome and reserved Italian, Anthony Bataglia. On loan from the Ufizzi, he is renowned for his ability to bring pre-Renaissance treasures back to life. Despite a rocky start, the two form a close working relationship, which Mackenzie hopes will blossom into something more. But as she works with him she begins to notice peculiar patterns and unexplainable similarities in all of his restorations. Something is clearly not what it seems to be with the dashing Mr. Bataglia. Mackenzie — with help from her father, a retired detective — is determined to uncover the truth, regardless of the consequences. What she discovers is more incredible than she could ever imagine: Anthony is not a forger; he is restoring his own work — paintings he made over 700 years ago. Cursed to age the equivalent of one day per year, Anthony has continually changed his identity to survive over the past millennium. The novel follows Anthony’s journey from true artist to a man consumed with fame and fortune, eventually losing all that he holds dear until he embraces the one true way out.

À propos de l?auteur

I’m not exactly sure when I decided to write fiction and become a novelist. One of my favorite things to do is to read fiction. In fact, it’s probably my favorite activity. I’m not a particularly fast reader, more of a consistent, steady plodder. I love to get into the dialogue, the description, the scene and setting. I have pretty eclectic tastes although I am definitely drawn to books that push the limits of reality. While I’m gradually moving towards becoming a full-time novelist, I continue to work as an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist. Back in 1993 I co-founded an assessment firm with two business partners, called Select International, Inc. which is headquartered in Pittsburgh. Over the past twenty years or so I’ve written over a hundred white papers, journal articles, book chapters and even a book, Hiring Great People. But writing technical papers is very far removed from writing fiction. There are more constraints, you need to back up what you are saying with results or references and the format is usually clearly outlined, and frankly, somewhat rigid. With fiction, though, it really is a blank page, which is both liberating and terrifying at the same time. About six years ago I got the idea for The Painter of Time, which is my debut novel. At the time it was just a concept and it needed a lot of fleshing out. To make it credible I needed to do a lot of research on art history and art restoration, neither of which I had any formal training or experience. But I love doing research and learning new things so it was a natural fit. What I didn’t realize is how hard it is to actually write a good novel. Whether or not I wrote a good novel is up to interpretation but there’s no denying that there is a lot more involved in the actual craft of writing that I ever expected. I’m currently working on my second novel, The Spirit of the Fox, which takes place in Japan. Hopefully, I can get my timeline for writing a novel down from the six years it took me for the first one. Like I said earlier, I’m sort of a consistent plodder, both as a reader and apparently as a writer. My wife Mari and I split our time between Incline Village, NV (essentially Lake Tahoe) and San Diego, CA, both of which are phenomenal locations. They’re both beautiful in their own way. We share our lives with our two dogs, Apollo and Athena, and three cats, Mercury, Isis and Nanna.
