Over years of teaching and practicing contemplative prayer in prisons and outside prison walls, the author has come to recognize the pervasive and destructive reality of toxic shame and ways of dealing with it. Guilt is the feeling we have when we have done something we consider to be wrong. Shame is how we feel about who we are because of what we have done. Toxic Shame is in a different category. It is not the rightful shame one feels when they know they have done something wrong. Rather, it is the unconscious shame that hides in the deep psyche. This shame says: "I am wrong." It's a soul slayer. This deep shame is a silent killer, so dangerous to the psyche, so threatening to one's intimate sense of one's self, that it effectively cuts the person off from the deepest part of themselves where they encounter God. Proper applications of contemplative prayer can facilitate remarkable transformation and new-found person freedom. The book is based on actual cases and insights from the people suffering this Toxic Shame.
