In her debut collection, Deidre CreativeSoul carries readers back and forth across the “DC-Maryland line” on the far Northeast edge of the United States’ capital city, where black families stretch between working-class neighborhoods on the Washington, DC side of the border and the sprawling middle-class suburbs of Prince George’s County, Maryland. The poet’s own experiences and evolution are related first as a child coming of age in this landscape, then as an adult returning home to “give back” to her community, and culminating with another departure for distant shores, She pauses along the way to explore the moments when our religious, romantic, social and intellectual roots shape our identities, whether we embrace, reject or transcend the result. The collection closes with a departure from poetry to tell a story from the author's first visit to Ghana, West Africa, and the slave fortress featured on the book's cover. Border Crossing includes a map of the collection's setting as well as a small glossary of terms that may not be familiar to readers who are not familiar with Washington, DC or African-American culture.
