How many Jewish women do you know who moved back to post-war Germany?

In this collection of holocaust survivor stories, you'll meet 16. Each of these women recounts her life story with grace and courage, even as they remember horrors of the holocaust. Stories of fleeing war and living as refugees, of deep personal loss and of German repatriation. Some were young and fled with family, some were older and escaped on their own. They all had to start fresh somewhere, with a new language in a new environment.

Ruth Galinski was forced to leave Germany for Poland in 1938. After her first husband didn’t come home, she fled to the Tatra mountains and survived there with a small resistance group. She met her second husband and committed to helping him rebuild the Jewish community in Berlin.

Steffi Wittenberg first fled to Uruguay with her family when she was 14. She wound up in Houston with her husband, fighting alongside union workers and against racism during the McCarthy trials.

Eva Fröhlich left everything behind and fled with her family to Uruguay. She married in Brazil and spent decades there. After their retirement, her husband wanted to return to Germany, where many of his friends had gone, but she didn’t want to.

Andrea von Treuenfeld makes herself invisible as she documents the words of each woman's autobiography. In this holocaust memoir, each subject relates personal perspectives on well-known events of Jewish history and how they influenced their Jewish identity.
