Calvin VanderWerf was the most transformative president in the history of Hope College, a small liberal-arts institution in Holland, Michigan. Cal VanderWerf: Anchor of Hope is the biography of the man as he encountered the College at crossroads in the turbulent 1960's. During the seven short years Cal was president, Hope dealt with war, race, generational conflicts, church influence, and political agitation. Against enormous odds, he caused Hope college to reach for, and many ways particularly in the sciences achieve, its highest potential. Calvin VanderWerf's foundational training was as an organic chemist, and he was the first Hope administrator with a scientific background. Cal VanderWerf: Anchor of Hope also provides a comprehensive look, from documents of the day, at the way the VanderWerfs guided Hope College into a future nearly overwhelmed by scientific discovery.

Professor Douglas Neckers is a photochemical scientist, and an alumnus of Hope College. His academic life was influenced by Hope's chemical history where he was a student of Gerrit Van Zyl's. Neckers followed Van Zyl's guidance and enrolled at the University of Kansas where Cal VanderWerf became, eventually, chair of the chemistry department. When VanderWerf moved to Hope as president, Neckers was one of the first young persons he asked to join his College. Neckers did this, and stayed at Hope for seven years, progressing later to a major research career in the photosciences, which he helped pioneer. Neckers retired as the McMaster Distinguished Research Professor at Bowling Green State University in 2009. There he had founded the Center for Photochemical Sciences- still one of the more significant Ph. D. granting physical sciences programs in Ohio. He currently serves as chief executive officer and founder of Spectra Group, a photochemical sciences company specializing in materials for 3-dimensional printing.
