Synopsis

Only a month after the events of "Center", Yegor Koshkin and his friends decided to get back to the Patomski Crater – just north-east of the Lake Baikal, on the border between the main Russian gold mining region and the diamond fields of Yakutia. They wanted to perform scientific research and measure the influence the crater on moral judgment and creative potential of people. Meanwhile, some other characters we met in the previous books of the series decided to attend the same area too, attracted by the presence of diamond fields there. Two concurrent activity got entangled in an unexpected way that created seemingly insurmountable problems for Yegor and his friends. In addition, another group of Americans appeared in the same general area persuading their own scientific and not so scientific interests. It has complicated already complex situation but eventually led to an unexpected turn of events. The story about the same group of characters will continue in the next novel "Dark Matter" that will be announced on www.nicksamoylov.com, where you also can find comments, facts, and photographs of the locations and events described in this and other novels of the series "Crater."

Nick Samoylov is a native Russian, born in Moscow, where his parents studied economics and finances and graduated with master’s degree from Moscow Institute of Finance. After the parents’ graduation, the family lived inside the Arctic Circle for seven years before moving to the Southern Ukraine where Nick went to school. He was a straight-A student in high school and performed as an athlete in track-and-field in the decathlon at the national level. Graduating from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technologies, Nick worked as a theoretical physicist, first in Moscow, then in Crimea. He also engaged in rock climbing, worked as a mountain guide and mountain rescue team member. After the USSR demise, Nick started two successful software companies but was forced to abandon them under the pressure of the criminal and state racket. At that time a German engineering company - one of the first foreign companies operating in Ukraine – hired him as a business consultant and then a head of their Ukrainian office. In 1999, already married with two daughters (both talented piano players; Royal College of Music invited them to study in London, where they have spent three years), Nick and his family won Green Card lottery and immigrated to the United States, where he and his wife still live in Colorado. Their older daughter Katia has graduated from Harvard, then earned her doctorate degree in philosophy from Brown University and now conducts research in the theory of mind and introspection and holds a teaching position at California State University, Chico. The younger daughter Maria has graduated from Tufts University with a degree in finance and now works as an executive director at JPMorgan Chase & Co in Madrid, Spain. Most of his working life Nick worked with his wife Luda, a mathematician and software programmer, in the same companies on the same projects, including eight years in Boeing company, where they authored a system that allowed – the first time in the aviation history – to load data to an airplane via the internet. A few recent years Nick works as a software consultant in the areas of web application development and machine learning. That was when he started writing fiction, books on Java programming and blogging.
