This is a fictionalized version of a story about a canoe trip into The Boundary Waters of Minnesota and the far reaches of the Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. The participants belonged to an Explorer Scout Post from Cincinnati, Ohio. There were dangers inherent in embarking on a long and difficult excursion into what was, at the time, a remote and unforgiving expanse of trails and waterways. But the boys knew what they were getting themselves into and they were not unprepared or untested. After all, the purpose of the trip was to expose them to portions of the north country that had actually been traversed by The Early French Voyageurs, who most would agree, set the standard for navigating canoes and surviving in the wilderness. When boys are told by their elders that, “It’s time for you to grow up and be a man” rarely does that admonition have life or death consequences, but it did on this trip. This is a coming of age tale where innocence and decency are crushed by circumstances that could not possibly have been anticipated. Come along with the boys on their trip. You won’t be disappointed.
