Synopsis

There is a logical progression from meeting someone for the first time, whether by intention or by chance, to turning that contact into a deeper connection that leads to collaborating on something you both care about. Ideally, that collaboration generates the powerful state of synergy. The purpose of this book is to guide you through the process and introduce you to many generous professionals who bring the content to life by contributing their expertise and experience with you. The book is divided into five sections: Contacts, Connections, Collaboration, Synergy, and Resources. Section 1: Contacts A contact is the first step, an introduction, an exchange of basic information. This chapter covers what you need to know about contacts: what they are; why they’re important; where to find them; how to make them; what to do before, during, and after a networking event; and how to establish a system for keeping track of them and staying in touch with them. In business, especially small business, contacts are currency. They have value. Contacts know things we don’t know or people we should meet. A single new contact can lead to something as small as a phone number or as life changing as a new job. Section 2: Connections A connection is more personal than a contact; it has the potential for a relationship. The chapter explains what connections are, how to establish and sustain them, where they lead, why they’re important, and how to become a connector. There are two ways to make connections: by turning a contact into one and by attracting connections in both the face-to-face world and the cyber world. Social media, which puts millions of potential relationships at your fingertips, is discussed extensively in this chapter. While it's tempting to put all of one’s energy into this way of connecting, there is still no substitute for getting to know someone in a face-to-face conversation. Section 3: Collaboration This chapter is about collaboration: what it is, how it grows from connections into something deeper, how to find heart-smart collaboration partners, how to create win-win situations, and why it’s important to talk about your goals and dreams with others. If a connection is a way to BE with another person, collaboration is what you and that person DO to achieve something greater than either of you could achieve alone. Section 4: Synergy Aristotle described synergy as a situation in which “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” (1 + 1 = 5). There are many other definitions listed at the beginning of this chapter, but frankly, Aristotle's simple explanation has stood the test of time. In collaboration, people work together to achieve a purpose; in synergy, they combine, like chemical elements to create something new. It is collaboration on steroids. This chapter explains what happens when these chemical elements come together, how they create synergy, and how the combination helps you and others achieve mutual goals. Section 5: Resources This section of the book is a perfect example of what happens when you reach out to others to achieve a goal. No two people could have created this book alone. Every contributor who added their thoughts and words to Contacts Connections Collaboration is listed with their contact information under References. In addition, you will find recommended reading and listening materials, business-building organizations, client and database management systems, instructions for how to assemble a get-connected-stay-connected kit, and more.
