Synopsis

For close to 150 years, Marxism could be categorized as having failed to understand the power that religion, nationalism, and sports have on the Yankee population. Because of this, in my experience, socialist gatherings have lacked the depth that rituals, pilgrimages, mythology, singing, and dancing together have in creating altered states of consciousness. Participating in Catholic Masses, fans celebrating World Series victories, or the singing of patriotic songs can move people to tears. But, some Marxists say, these are superstitious smoke-and-mirrors games which will turn people into sentimental romantics.

What Marxists overlook is how Marx’s criticisms of religion lumped together the magick of tribal societies with the monotheism of class societies. Yet magick was practiced in egalitarian societies and has potential for conducting rituals in a non-superstitious non-reified manner. Some elements of the Neopagan movement of today—specifically Atheopagans and what are called ‘soft’ polytheists—are extraordinarily good at producing meaningful rituals which sweep people away without superstition and reification. Magick draws from the same mythology, images of pilgrimages, singing and dancing as religion, sports and nationalism without the authoritarian trappings. The purpose of this book is to bring the importance of Neopagan rituals into socialist gatherings so that our practice will be inspired, and our materialism can become enchanted.

Bruce Lerro spent thirty years of adjunct college teaching in the Bay Area. He has been a council communist for fifty years. He has learned magickal practices based on the Tree of Life, drawing inspiration from Israel Regardie, Dion Fortune, Melita Dennings, Osborne Phillips, and Sophia Madonna Compton.
