This report to citizens and leaders is based on the Utah County Community Assessment 2015. It focuses on housing: homeownership, rentals, and homelessness. Data show that Utah County’s housing situation is becoming more and more unaffordable for young professionals, those living with low wages, and those on fixed incomes. Home prices and rental rates continue to rise (although tempered somewhat by the 2007 recession and the years following), and the capacity of these young professionals and others to live in safe, affordable homes close to work, recreation, and shopping is diminishing. As the growth of these young populations—as well as those on low or fixed incomes—increases, the lower-end housing stock has not kept pace. To adequately prepare for future demands, stakeholders must actively engage in effective solutions. The implications and recommendations found in this brief were developed by Civicus Consulting Group after analysis of community data, telephone survey data, focus groups, and consultations with scores of community leaders, residents, and stakeholders. Funders of this project, though gratefully acknowledged, are not responsible for the recommendations found herein.
