Synopsis

James Calemine's The Local Stranger is a collection of seven fictional short stories illustrated throughout by Calemine's signature gritty photographs taken with a Leica camera and presented as unfiltered as his writing.

Throughout this collection Calemine writes about the lives of unforgettable men and women: drifters, bartenders, addicts, lovers, musicians, hustlers and criminals. The stories transpire in southern cities and towns as the characters struggle with their pasts and future, their faith and their failures.

While the plots and characters in these stories are only be loosely intertwined, they are thematically connected where matters of the soul are at stake.

A prolific author of essays, interviews and his signature dispatches, James Calemine's writing has been featured in The Bitter Southerner, South Magazine, Georgia Trend, Paste, Swampland and many other publications. He has published five full-length books on Snake Nation Press, a non-profit literary press founded in 1989 in Valdosta, Georgia, by New York Times best-selling author, Roberta George. Snake Nation is committed to fostering the appreciation of literature in all its myriad forms.A talented photographer with a unique vision that complements and enhances the gritty realism of his literary voice, Calemine is never far from his Leica camera.
