The Reading Companion was created by Teri Oberstein Azar, a Reading Specialist in Laguna Hills, CA. Teri holds her M.Ed. and Reading Specialist Credential from UCLA, where she also earned her teaching credential in an exclusive program where learning theory, driving best teaching practices, was transformed into fun teaching strategies. Teri’s undergraduate study in sociology and psychology forged her passion to create universal teaching tools that would ensure equal access to those of diverse cultures and learning modalities. The Reading Companion’s uniquely generic questions combine Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) across the story elements to ensure critical thinking resulting in focused reading that has yielded dramatic results in student achievement and motivation across cultures and ability levels. These questions have proven an exciting tool because they are easily internalized and transferred to any story until the process becomes automatic; reading is actively engaged.
