Recently unemployed and single, wildlife biologist Sage McAllister travels alone to Kenya's Maasai Mara, drawn by something outside of her awareness, toward animals who are calling her. Out on the vast, open savanna, she meets Rohan, a wild lion, and Kamara, his fierce, golden-eyed companion. They communicate with her telepathically, as clearly as any human ever has, and they ask her for help.
In addition to hearing their thoughts, Sage merges with the lions to see, hear, and experience their world. Through them, she learns what's happening to lions beyond the tourist routes: poaching, trophy hunting, poisoning, and retaliatory killing, all contributing to the gradual erasure of a species most people don’t know is under dire threat.
But Sage isn't the only one watching the lions. A stranger turns up everywhere she goes: the plane, the hotel, the bush. Sage can't decide if he's dangerous or dreamy. She finds out when she is pulled into a high-stakes wildlife crime drama.
