HONORABLE MENTION in the PARIS BOOK FESTIVAL 2023
Ray Goldberg Rivera, fresh from the Vietnam War, finds himself restless and unready to settle down. His life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters a persuasive member of the International Explorers Club. She lures him into an exhilarating adventure: a journey to the heart of the Amazon rainforest—a place teeming with mystery, danger, and untold riches.
But Ray isn’t alone. Alongside him are two unlikely companions. The California Surfer is a sun-kissed wanderer who has never strayed far from home, now embarking on a adventurous escapade beyond his wildest dreams. The other is a sexy, Bible-thumping Southern girl. Her allure is as irresistible as her convictions. Together, they form an eclectic trio, bound by curiosity and the promise of fortune.
Their trusty steed? Ray’s beloved 1962 Volkswagen Beetle, its engine humming with anticipation. From Pasadena, California, they set forth, crossing borders, cultures, and landscapes. As they traverse Mexico, Central, and South America, they encounter a kaleidoscope of unforgettable characters—each with their own secrets and desires.
Drugs, passion, and near-death experiences punctuate their journey, revealing the raw motivations that drive them forward. Amidst the lush rainforest, they grapple with life’s purpose, seeking meaning in every twist of the winding road.
Will they find treasure? Will they lose themselves? And what lies hidden in the heart of the Amazon?
This enthralling tale will captivate armchair travelers, history buffs, and anyone hungry for adventure. So buckle up, dear reader, and join Ray and his companions as they chase destiny through the jungle’s green veil.

Author Dennis Torres is the grandson of a famous writer who mentored and encouraged him as a young boy to write. His curiosity about all things led to him having more than sixty-four jobs and careers (so far) including running the merry-go-round on the Santa Monica Pier and being a post office letter carrier, a dairy farmer, bartender, soldier, big-rig truck driver, commercial pilot, and long-time teacher at a top-tier west coast university.
Following high school he lived in New York City’s fabled Hotel Chelsea until graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology then went on to study philosophy, law, and dispute resolution at several colleges and universities always writing in the process. Like Ray Goldberg Rivera he is a veteran having served his country in Vietnam.
In 1969 he met his wife Averi (a renowned psychic) at Barney’s Beanery, then a popular hangout for creative types in Hollywood, California; that night they went home together, never parted, and married six weeks later. For a honeymoon they bought a tent trailer and traveled around the United States and Canada for a year while Dennis wrote. In 1976 he became a vegetarian and has not missed a single day since without an hour of yoga and half hour mediation. In 1980 he and Averi bought a home overlooking the beach in Malibu and divide their time between there and traveling, mostly in their motor coach along with their miniature Schnauzer/Poodle named Spirit.
