Synopsis

The ultimate Depeche Mode fan memoir. 2017 Finalist for the BookLife Prize.

Both an ode to the joy of music and a cautionary tale of obsession, Jenna Rose Robbins' coming-of-age adventure offers a glimpse into a subculture where unchecked fanaticism can lead to both euphoric and devastating consequences. The rock-and-roll memoir tells of Robbins' time following Depeche Mode (Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher, and Alan Wilder) on the 1993 Devotional tour, bringing readers face to face with the artists she idolized. Although often referred to as a new-wave music version of Almost Famous for its insight into the groupie subculture of one of the biggest British bands ever, the award-winning book will appeal to fans of any music genre.

In 2017, on the same day the book was released, Robbins was the first fan chosen for a year-long contest in which each winner took over Depeche Mode's Facebook page for a day. From this group of Takeoverees, six fans were chosen to be featured in the band's documentary Spirits in the Forest, in which Robbins makes a brief (six-second) appearance singing out of tune in a Berlin karaoke bar.
