Synopsis

The essays in this volume span some of Orestes Brownson’s most prolific years as a theorist and commentator on the American political order. In the 1840s he came to reject, on philosophical, theological, and historical grounds, the whole interpretation of American meaning and destiny that animated his political theory for almost two decades. Upon his conversion to Catholicism, Brownson embraced a radically new perspective on the philosophy of history and politics, one which presented him with the necessary intellectual tools to break out of a distinctly modern way of interpreting the American regime. These tools were fashioned out of the classical tradition in political philosophy, and ultimately it was Brownson’s reading of American history in the light of this tradition that inspired him to develop his organic theory of the state and its attendant theory of Catholic-American historical and political convergence. It is in this theoretical construct that we find an element of continuity to the otherwise diverse collection of essays in Volume 3, and a primer of sorts for Brownson’s more polished and mature political thought of the 1850s and 1860s.
