Bob Wilhelm's grandparents arrived in Traverse City from Bohemia in 1854, two years after Perry Hannah came to the area. His grandfather opened the A.J. Wilhelm Department store, a store which later became a centennial business, achieving recognition as a state historical site. One of Bob's distant relatives, Charles Wilhelm, helped establish the City Opera House, now recognized as a National Historic site. Majoring in American History in college, he spent many years researching and teaching Michigan history to young people and adults. After he retired from the Howell Public Schools, Bob returned to his native Traverse City and worked with the state sesquicentennial committee, supported the Michigan History Museum in developing curriculum related to the state's history and gave untold hours of time to the History Center of Traverse City now known as the Traverse Area Historical Society. Bob Wilhelm passed away in 2014 having begun this book as his last project to awaken people to the wonderful story of Traverse City history.
