At midlife, Dr. Clara Young found herself suffering from depression, menopause, and breast cancer. During the cancer treatment, she was forced to refer her psychotherapy patients out, losing her practice, which took decades to build. Her medical bills, health insurance, and unexpected expenses drained her entire life savings. After the treatment was over, she found herself jobless, poor, sick, and living in a garage with a full blown paranoia of cancer recurrence. And the depression that took years to manage came back with a vengeance with suicidal thoughts. The decision was simple. “Get busy living or get busy dying.” There was no answer, so she flipped a coin. Dr. Clara knew this much. If she chooses to get busy living, she had to do something new and different. She couldn’t go back to her old, negative life which could have contributed to the cancer diagnosis. Einstein reminded her: “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.” When nothing seemed to work to save her life and give her hope to carry on, an unlikely lifeline made an appearance and came to her rescue. It was something that had been absent in her life for more than 40 years – Happiness. Dr. Clara discovered that happiness is not just an emotion, but a powerful tool, that can help us survive all kinds of issues, small or big, and achieve goals and dreams, while laughing, eating, and having fun every day. “I used to believe if I got money and things, it would bring happiness, but the truth is, if I can find happiness now with what I have and who I am, it will bring good things, and it has. Happiness is built inside of us and not outside. We already have it. Imagine that. When we are in a happy mode, even a few minutes a day, it empowers us with motivation and mental power to get through the daily chaos with a positive attitude, which can improve every aspect of our lives, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, and helps us keep breathing and moving forward under any circumstances. I don’t fall for the deception of waiting any more. I wasted my whole life doing that. I’ve learned the hard way that life is unpredictable and everything can change in a split second and it can all be gone, so why wait? Nothing is guaranteed, not even tomorrow. So, we need to be happy now to survive, have fun, and stay sane in an insane world.” Dr. Clara Happiness to the Rescue is candid, informative, funny, and heartwarming. Dr. Clara shares her personal stories and life lessons learned from half a century of living to overcome all kinds of medical and mental issues, difficult people, loneliness, discrimination, hot flashes, and so much more. The book teaches us how to be happy with what we have and who we are now.
