The little town of Crockett, California had been sitting in the path of airborne toxins for generations. Her residents knew it, but never had the voices with which to organize, much less take action and no one would have cared if they did. In 1994, that all changed when the Unocal petroleum refinery secretly polluted the sky for weeks and handed now-furious Crockett both the perfect adversary and legal opportunity to take back its power, and to keep it. Fresh out of law school, idealistic and determined to make a success of his fledgling law practice, Scott Cole shared his clients disdain for bullies and the Entitled. While Unocal rushed to cover up the incident and its greed, Scott raced to rally the town, challenging the company first on its own doorstep and then in the courts, filing a billion-dollar class action lawsuit, his first ever. Through this budding legal advocate's eyes, get a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of class action litigation, and how this young lawyer partnered with a community of thousands to expose one of California's worst environmental tragedies. Against the backdrop of corporate greed and heart-wrenching stories of human loss, it's the incredible tale of triumph and the amazing changes that once-little voices made just by standing up and saying enough.

Scott Edward Cole was born in San Pablo California in 1965 and has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area ever since. He graduated from San Francisco State University in 1989 with a B. A. in Speech Communications and from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1992. Later that year, Scott launched his solo legal practice and, in the early years of his career, devoted himself to representing victims of toxic chemical releases such as the one showcased in his book Fallout. Over the next several years, Scott led several other complex environmental cases but, in 2000, shifted the emphasis of his growing firm to workers-side class actions. Since then, he has handled hundreds of consumer and employment class action matters, has authored numerous articles and spoken widely to audiences regarding many of the lessons learned from these experiences.
