In the days of cell phones and GPS one would think books such as this would be obsolete. Not so. Cell phone batteries die rather quickly and reception is still often non-existent in wilderness areas. Small planes still crash. Cars still get stuck in the sand. Hikers still get lost. And despite all the advances in science, there are no new ways to find water in the desert. No magic wand has been developed to make obtaining food in a survival situation any easier. For all of this, the once tried and true methods of the past still apply. Nevertheless, Staying Alive in the Desert, originally published by the author as Alive in the Desert in 1978, has been updated with what information that wasn’t available then. Unlike most books, written to inspire or entertain, this one can actually save your life.

Joe Kraus has spent most of his years living in or near the deserts of California, Nevada, and Arizona. Staying Alive in the Desert is a product of his many years of intimate involvement with this most unaccommodating, yet uniquely beautiful, form of terrain. At an early age his interest in the desert led him to research and study the flora and fauna common to the American southwest. He later participated in special survival courses sponsored by the US Army’s Green Berets, and famed Norwegian survivalist Odd Berjerk. His participation in desert rescue operations led him to publish several national magazine articles on desert survival. In all, Kraus has written more than 300 national magazine articles on various topics, which have been published in a good sixty different publications. A journalist by trade his entire life, he spent the last fifteen of those years as managing editor of daily newspapers in California and Arizona. Staying Alive in the Desert is an updated version of Kraus’s earlier book Alive in the Desert, first published in 1978. His other books include Tales from the Deep: The Life and Times of the USS Manatee and its Always Ready and Sometimes Willing Crew and the soon-to-be-released Desert Rats: They Came with a Pick, a Shovel, and a Dream. He also co-wrote (with Ron Stovall) The Famous and Successful: Their Advice for All of Us. For many years an active member of the Sierra Club and several other outdoor organizations, Kraus now resides in Stockton, California, with his wife Karren of nearly fifty years. Three grown children and six grandchildren live nearby.
