CROSSHAIRS is a gritty, timely novel set mainly during the second term of America's forty-third President. The book's central character, Reginald Branson, is perfectly calibrated for the political mood of the country during the second term of a deeply unpopular White House. The plot structure of the book, narrated by Alfred Turner, a senior Foreign Service officer, and Branson's best friend, is the historic rise of a little known African-American political strategist to become the first Black President of the United States. There is a sense of magical realism about the central character: his total devotion to his wife, Josephine, and the power of their partnership to transform lofty and improbable dreams into reality. The story of Reginald and Josephine is both simple and beautifully choreographed: a story replete with fist-pumping highs and mind-numbing lows.
