The M stands for Marc in M. Boone. I was born in March of 1968 in Brooklyn, New York. As a kid, my mommy read me bedtime stories like Snow White and Cinderella. Fairy tales were like my Bible. I believed in Fairy Godmother. The Prince was my savior, and I was Cinderella. Seeing myself as a pretty, white lady was confusing enough, but being attracted to the Prince was even more troublesome. I couldn’t share that part of me with anyone else. That became my first deep, dark secret. I kept that secret throughout my school years. I went to Brooklyn Technical High School and then to Parsons School of Design where I studied illustration. I moved abroad when I was 23 years old and fell in love for the first time in Amsterdam. The relationship gave me the courage to come out. I was finally living my fairy tale. I started developing the Bedtime Stories for Queer Folks series while I lived in Amsterdam, Holland (1993-1996) and in Johannesburg, South Africa (1996-2002). It was hard to find work in both countries. So I babysat, cleaned, and waited tables to get by. My break came during my last two years in South Africa. I worked as a storyteller, a performance artist, a visual artist, and a playwright. In 2002, after nine years away, I humbly returned to Brooklyn, New York. I currently work as an art teacher for grades Pre-K through 5th grade. I help my students find their voice. My students help me stay optimistic.
