The Boys from the Projects is a true and delightfully moving account about twelve multiethnic teenagers who grow up in a Seattle housing project in the 1950s. Challenged by poverty and destined for lives of crime, they form lifelong bonds of friendship that enable them to overcome a host of obstacles and become men of accomplishment and distinction. The boys band together to combat prejudice and insufficiency and support one another as they struggle to overcome tremendous adversity. Four times, Ron narrowly escapes an early death. His car is stolen. His father suffers an incapacitating stroke when he is in high school and he flunks out of the University. For a season, they resort to anti-social behavior for excitement and gain. Despite poor choices, their mind-boggling antics are humorous and informative. They learn that adversity is not a demon to be feared, but rather a crucible that forms personalities and produces perseverance, grit, maturity and success. The story is an illustration of the triumph of the human spirit over poverty, adversity, prejudice, and crime.
