Michael S. Long attended California public schools before the Right to Education Act. He was the first person with an intellectual disability to be hired by a state government, when California Governor Pete Wilson appointed him as the Consumer Coordinator at the Department of Developmental Services in 1992.

Karl Williams has published two books with leaders in the self-advocacy movement, the civil rights work of people with intellectual disabilities. His play, based on one of these, Lost In A Desert World: The Autobiography of Roland Johnson, premiered in San Diego. Williams' third book, Hello, Stranger by Barbara Moran (as told to Williams), was published by KiCam Projects in 2019.
