The West Wing meets ER with an Aviation Twist
Grief engulfs former Navy Blue Angel pilot Brad Morehouse when a fleeting communication lapse sends his close friend and fellow team member hurtling to his death in Pensacola Bay. Haunted by the tragedy and questioning the events leading up to the crash, Brad vows to change flawed perspectives and procedures he believes contribute to untold airline accidents and incidents. But the obstacles are daunting.
Gradually, a shift in life-saving crew behaviors at fictional Omega airlines emerges. However, 737 equipment failure cast as pilot error will wind up threatening careers as well as the entire airline, and jeopardizing the lives of Brad, his new love and hundreds of others.
The broad strokes of this compelling aviation drama and stunning expose of airline accidents are based on fact. In the years leading up to the novel’s timeframe, airliners were falling out of the sky on a regular basis. Something had to change. Overhauling inconsistent airline operating procedures and a hierarchical culture was a complex undertaking. Author and airline Captain Art Samson—a 737 check pilot and instructor—had the cat bird’s seat for the remarkable transformation that inspired this novel.
We’re Going Down melds vivid hair-raising accounts of botched performance that provided the grist for change with a gripping plot in which deeply entrenched macho attitudes, rigid leadership and vexing personal foibles provide obstacles at every turn. Brad and a blue-ribbon team set out to right the ship, while in the meantime a major flaw in the 737 rudder control system also threatens to take the airline down. Combine that with a dose of Brad’s own demons and the stage is set for turmoil.
