Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. "Bridges a Study in Their Art, Science, and Evolution" is a comprehensive exploration of the dual nature of bridge-building-as both a precise engineering discipline and a profound form of architectural art. Written by Charles S. Whitney, this work traces the historical progression of bridges from ancient stone structures to the massive steel and concrete spans of the early twentieth century. The author delves into the aesthetic principles that guide bridge design, arguing that a bridge must be as beautiful as it is functional.Through detailed analysis, the book examines the various materials and techniques utilized throughout history, highlighting how scientific advancements have expanded the possibilities of structural engineering. The text provides a deep dive into the evolution of different bridge types, including arch, cantilever, and suspension designs. It serves as both a technical reference for those interested in civil engineering and a historical narrative for enthusiasts of architectural development. By bridging the gap between art and science, Whitney offers a unique perspective on how these vital components of infrastructure shape landscapes and connect civilizations. This work remains a foundational study for understanding the structural and visual legacy of the world's most iconic bridges. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
